Everyone who has been paying attention to the recent economic woes has noticed that Chrysler one of the former best car companies in the United States is now partially owned by Fiat. This deal takes place amongst severe financial difficulties and incompetent fiscal mismanagement by the top officials of Chrysler. In return for getting access to the American market Fiat will in turn show Chrysler how to build better more fuel efficient vehicles.

Fiat was founded in 1899 and is the worlds 6th largest carmaker. In their long run they have made cars, railroad cars, aircraft, and tanks. They have long been considered one of the best sports cars manufacturers and are Italy’s largest car maker. The company has evolved far from what is use to be in its early days but still maintains strong ties with aviation, agriculture, aeronautics, and a variety of other fields.

Chrysler was founded in 1935 and was one of the most powerful North American car manufacturers in its day. They excelled at producing quality vehicles at affordable prices and were instrumental along with other American car companies during World War 2 in the production of parts, tanks, and jeeps for the war. After the war was over Chrysler continued to produce vehicles for the American public.

Eventually they became one of the featured brands of racing vehicles featured in such racing leagues such as NASCAR and other high performance automotive sports of the time. However as it reached the mid 90’s Chrysler shifted it’s priorities to profit rather than quality and their cars began to suffer. By the late 90’s Chryslers quality was being thrown into question as poor design choices, massive recalls, and rumors of corrupt CEO’s refused to go away.

People were turning to foreign car makers such as Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, and Kia rather than a Chrysler product. This can be said for most American car makers about the last 15 years. They started to manufacture cars with more bells, whistles, and gimmicks rather than invest in the base quality. Fuel efficiency fell behind foreign competitors, service center visits were more frequent, and the interior of the vehicles began to feel cheap.

Add to the factor that Chrysler was charging more than their competition for a sub quality vehicle and their doom seemed inevitable. In 2009 Chrysler’s financial woes hit hard and they filed for bankruptcy under chapter 11. Since then they have partaken of government bailouts from the U.S. government and their financial matters are still in poor shape. Currently they are attempting to rebuild their car lineup with newer more efficient vehicles but they are still lacking.

Fiats acquisition of 35% of Chrysler has left some with faint hope that Chrysler can learn how to make quality vehicles again. Currently their vehicles have been brought up to the standard that is expected of a modern vehicle but nothing earth shattering. It doesn’t take much to make a great car that people want.

Foreign automaker Hyundai has proved this as well as many other foreign car companies and even the American Company Ford. Currently the future looks bright for Fiat as they now have a new market to sell their sports cars in.
